Review For Total Recall

'Total Recall' is Hollywood at its worst: pointless, witless, and so very unnecessary.
Tom Huddleston-Time Out

"Total Recall" is a toned-down, smoothed-out version of an amped-up, bug-eyed classic.
Rafer Guzman-Newsday

This is a taut, serviceable sci-fi thriller with a couple of neat visual ideas, and if you're not familiar with either the Schwarzenegger version or the original story, the brain-bending twists alone will take you a reasonably long way.
Dana Stevens-Slate

Casting and visuals are an upgrade, but we get far too many action sequences and not enough of the mind games.
Richard Roeper-Richard Roeper.com

I was no particular fan of the first Total Recall, but I confess that this flat, by-the-numbers remake made me a tad nostalgic for its bombastic preposterousness.
Christopher Orr-The Atlantic

Whatever tug Total Recall has on the imagination comes from the vague sense we've seen it all before. And seen it better: from Christopher Nolan's Inception to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

A generic, inconsequential sci-fi caper that looks slick and has a famous title, and offers little else, no matter how many nipples the whores have.
Eric D. Snider-EricDSnider.com

It would rather be a blockbuster than a mind-bender. It turns out to be neither.
Will Leitch-Deadspin

More or less serviceable action thriller with some nice ideas for visual set pieces, but did it really have to be as long as it is?
Catherine Bray-Film4

Messing with memories is how you forget that a better version of Total Recall happened 22 years ago.
Tom Glasson-Concrete Playground

If there had never been an 'original' Total Recall, the reaction to Wiseman's version would surely have been a lot less frosty. Because in and of itself, it's a decent enough sci-fi action flick - severely flawed, but a lot of fun.
Dave Golder-SFX Magazine

Visually, the 2012 remake is better than the original, with interesting set and background designs, decent enough futuristic vehicles, and superb special effects. The plot is another story.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

Wiseman makes mildly pretty films, full of blues and grays and lens flares, but they're the definition of bland.
Rob Gonsalves-eFilmCritic.com

[D]irector Len Underworld Wiseman's least hacktackular movie yet, which isn't to say that it's quality entertainment, but it is some solid B-grade processed-cheese-product movie junk food.
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

While far from terrible, this retread forgoes any qualities to justify its existence in the first place. It will be justly forgotten before long.
Rob Humanick-Projection Booth

A remake that's well-worth missing.
Jason Buchanan-TV Guide's Movie Guide

This new version of Total Recall is the cinematic equivalent of a vibrator: it is whirling, sleek, shiny and utterly artificial, yet it gets you where you need to go.
Adam Ross-The Aristocrat

A bright and shiny slice of blockbuster sci-fi that's so dazzling it makes tender love to your retinas but so underwhelming it practically wipes itself from your memory the instant it's over.
Ali Gray-TheShiznit.co.uk

Delivers a serviceable piece of updated movie product.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

Enough visual spectacle to make viewers wish they had three eyeballs but thin characters and a convoluted story ultimately undermine Wiseman's successes.
Ben Kendrick-ScreenRant

Total Recall is it's own beast - one that needs to be caged off and held at arm's length. It is a mess, a wasteful rethink that was never needed and lousy movie at worst.
Patrick Kolan-Shotgun Critic

"Total Recall" is a totally unnecessary remake of a moderately amusing sci-fi thriller from 1990. The 2012 version starring Colin Farrell is about as memorable as yesterday's lunch.
Paul Chambers-Movie Chambers

Engaging visual effects don't make up for a banal script and paper-thin characters.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

Total Recall is nothing more than a lazy, dull, soulless studio effort wrapped up in an enticing sci-fi landscape.
Jonathan Lack-We Got This Covered

What we end up with is a forgettable, monotonous reimagining that was wholly unnecessary.
Jeff Beck-Examiner.com

A sci-fi action movie that wears its influences loudly, what Total Recall lacks in originality it makes up in its brooding tech-world action noir spectacle.

Killer

Review For Killer Joe

If you like your movies filled with twisted humor, sexual perversion, psychological intimidation and sudden violence, "Killer Joe" is the flick for you.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Watching "Killer Joe" to the bitter end is like playing the Pick 6 lottery and getting three of the numbers right. You don't win anything, but you still think you're smarter than all those other idiots.
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

You will either love "Killer Joe" or run away screaming. I absorbed this NC-17 nail bomb with awestruck admiration.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

[Friedkin] has retained his touch ... all these years later. And in Matthew McConaughey, he has the perfect vehicle for madness.
Bill Goodykoontz-Arizona Republic

You end up feeling sorry for all the actors forced to humiliate themselves, except for McConaughey, whose portrayal of sadistic, manipulative evil is mesmerizing.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

The movie frequently clicks as a sendup of over-the-top film-noir storytelling.
John Hartl-Seattle Times

This Southern-fried, darkly humorous trailer-trash exploitation crime noir revels in the greedy characters' idiocy and the deranged story's psychosexual luridness.
Eric D. Snider-EricDSnider.com

An intriguing (and sometimes off-putting) cinematic creation featuring Matthew McConaughey in one of his best performances.
John Hanlon-Big Hollywood

The movie is gross and smutty: It is having so much fun portraying terrible people doing terrible things to one another that it has no interest in pausing to think about what any of this means. Thankfully.
Will Leitch-Deadspin

McConaughey is making an emphatic statement that 2012 is going to be his renaissance. And not even a turkey like "Killer Joe" is going to get in his way.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

Friedkin, Letts and the entire cast barrel ahead through incredibly strange, dark territory, never looking back to see if the audience is keeping up. But those who do won't regret it.
Meredith Borders-Badass Digest

McConaughey is funny and fearsome in the title role, the devil holding the family accountable for their choices.
Mark Pfeiffer-Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema

As sordid and vile as possible.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

Killer Joe is America at its worst but Friedkin and McConaghey at very close to their best.
Blake Howard-2UE That Movie Show

It's like a cheap, nasty dessert: completely devoid of nutrition, probably very bad for you, but kind of delicious while it briefly lasts.
CJ Johnson-ABC Radio (Australia)

Only the faint-hearted or KFC kitchen staff should give it a miss.
Andy Lea-Daily Star

Stage-to-screen adaptations are rarely this primal, and it's been a long time since a William Friedkin film has felt so vital.
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

The humor magnifies the horror, and vice versa. Like the inflammatory Dr. Strangelove, we've sewn these seeds, and we deserve whatever is reaped from them.
Rob Humanick-Projection Booth

Killer Joe will leave many people in shock, confusion, and in need of a thorough shower by the time it's done.
Kofi Outlaw-ScreenRant

The scene with the fried chicken drumstick might cause Colonel Sanders to repurpose one of his famous buckets as a barf bag.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Killer Joe is a white-hot fever dream of a film. A toxic swill of sex and violence, Joe is mordantly funny, tantalizing and, ultimately, shocking.
Adam Ross-The Aristocrat

Matthew McConaughey gives an intensely wry performance while director William Friedkin applies his old-master craftsmanship to a brutal, ugly story.
John Wirt-Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA)

Killer Joe will both infuriate and impress, but when it impresses there is nothing quite like it. It plays on the senses and lingers in the mind, McConaughey is brilliant and Friedkin finds himself in his best form in years
Will Chadwick-We Got This Covered

Resembling yard sculptures in a trailer park, where trash becomes art, "Killer Joe" is a Picasso signed with a branding iron.
Graham Killeen-Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Sick and twisted in the most interesting ways.
Scott Weinberg-Twitch

A daringly impressive and darkly funny work, which sees its director William Friedkin return to the audacious spirit of his early films.
Andrew Moraitis-FILMINK (Australia)

Review For Ice Age: Continental Drift

Yes, this is the part where I outsource my critical role to my children. If you are the kind of person who (quite understandably) abhors this particular gimmick, you may wish to stop reading now.
Christopher Orr-The Atlantic

The best bits are basic and all but voiceless: those Scrat-intensive set pieces, still inspiredly squirrelly if much too far apart.
Jonathan Kiefer-Village Voice

These films are generally good at being good enough, and the fourth installment, Ice Age: Continental Drift, doesn't deviate from that modest tradition.
William Goss-Film.com

In the end, this latest "Ice Age" movie is about as surprising and unpredictable as a glacier. And not much more fun.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

Whenever I watch an "Ice Age" movie, I understand how my mother felt whenever I zoned out in front of the television after school.
Rafer Guzman-Newsday

Popping from one silly set piece to another is all that really concerns the screenwriters.
Kyle Smith-New York Post

The swashbuckling stuff is boisterous, if dated, and proves far more engaging than a tedious sub-plot involving Manny's rebellious teenage daughter.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

The first "Ice Age" is still the best, but as fabricated and Saturday morning as this installment is, it's still an accomplished bit of animated filmmaking.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

Here the franchise that recycles other kids' movies recycles itself.
Cynthia Fuchs-Time to Play Magazine

The beautiful animation and wonderful character design continue to impress, but the seafaring action is sunk by sub-sitcom-level lessons about family and friendship.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Apparently Fox are making a fifth, and people wonder what's pushing originality out of Hollywood.
Sam Bathe-Fan The Fire

This is simply the case of a series that has fully run its course without anywhere left to go.
Jeff Beck-Examiner.com

There have been far worse children's films than Ice Age: Continental Drift, even this year, but few that make me so depressed about Hollywood's utter contempt for young moviegoers.
Jonathan Lack-We Got This Covered

[Teaches] the children of the world all the clichés that they will rapidly come to despise over the course of the following decades.
William Bibbiani-CraveOnline

The difference between mild endorsement and a dismissive "ehh" technically isn't part of the movie. It's the 5-minute short subject preceding Continental Drift, a wordless gem titled The Longest Daycare starring Maggie Simpson.
Steve Persall-Tampa Bay Times

moves quickly, is well directed, and from time to time achieves some real suspense. If it also shows how the franchise is wearing a little thin, it also shows why it has lasted this long.
Andrea Chase-Killer Movie Reviews

Let's make this one extinct.
Grae Drake-Movies.com

...everything I liked about the original movie has been worn down.
Leonard Maltin-indieWIRE

... worthless junk, just like the three worthless movies that came before it.
Jim Lane-Sacramento News & Review

The "Ice Age" franchise runs out of steam with a narratively inert example of animated fluff.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

Contains more than enough high energy hi-jinks to keep distractible kiddies entertained.
Tom Clift-Moviedex

Kids will love this film and parents won't be bored for a minute.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

Fossilized in a syrupy, always-stick-by-your-family-and-friends formula. Scrat provides the only constant humour. The surrealism and manic slapstick that animation can do so well are dwarfed by adventures with pirates and a clichéd teen-fitting-in story.
Brian Gibson-Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)

More solid, at least, than the ice on which its characters float, 'Ice Age: Continental Drift' is a fun fourth installment of the popular franchise that has charmed its fans for years.
Linda Cook-Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)

A hollow simulation of what fun for the whole family looks and sounds like.
Mark Pfeiffer-Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema

A useless money vacuum.

Review For 2 Guns

In this star vehicle for Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, the headlights are on full beam but the engine is struggling in second gear.
Trevor Johnston-Time Out

Beyond ridiculous but always entertaining. Washington and Wahlberg are terrific.
Richard Roeper-Richard Roeper.com

The biggest guns this action flick brandishes are stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg who have very different acting styles that work surprisingly well together.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

It's essentially a buddy-cop romp with the usual assortment pack of graphic gruesomeness.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

An unremarkable, standard-issue shoot-em-up that rests entirely on the charisma of its two stars.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

Banter, banter, banter. It's such fun being a tough guy and killing people.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Oddly took some advice not intended for movies: 'Be specific but not memorable. Be funny but don't make 'em laugh.'
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

In this age of never-ending franchises and pointless reboots it's quite refreshing to see a funny, action-packed film that's so utterly disposable.
Andy Lea-Daily Star

Movies that aim for the middle often fall short.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

America's public agencies come very badly out of this slick thriller.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

Washington and Wahlberg are an effective double act in an intermittently exciting thriller with more twists than it needs.
Neil Smith-Total Film

...a convoluted mix of violence, not-so-witty humor and spaghetti western, with a tad too much tomato sauce thrown on top by director Baltasar Kormakur.
John Urbancich-Sun Newspapers of Cleveland

There's plenty of hot spice in this enjoyably silly graphic novel adaptation about two undercover agents unwittingly working together.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Director Baltasar Kormakur keeps the pace and patter loose and lively; the result is almost refreshing -- a run through a sprinkler on a summer movie-season lawn cluttered with junked blockbusters.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

This class of sleek bickering comes along all too rarely.
Donald Clarke-Irish Times

Wahlberg gives Washington levity; Washington gives Wahlberg resolve.
Guy Lodge-This is London

It's all complete nonsense, entirely predictable and feels like it is going to last for ever.
Allan Hunter-Daily Express

What looks like a rather standard buddy action comedy is elevated by a smarter-than-normal script, skilful direction and surprisingly offhanded chemistry between Washington and Wahlberg.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

You'd think this might be a shocking, even paranoid scenario, but instead it comes across as too ridiculous to be even slightly believable.
Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK]

Not much firepower.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Enjoyable, pacily directed and pleasingly old fashioned buddy cop thriller enlivened by a witty script and engaging chemistry between Wahlberg and Washington.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

A fairly indistinct Tex-Mex time-filler that soon gets lost amid memories of cooler, dustier, sweatier tear-ups.
Adam Lee Davies-Little White Lies

Wahlberg makes lines such as "You know what you are? A misanthorp" so insanely funny you laugh in the way you used to at Eddie Murphy.
Antonia Quirke-Financial Times

2 Guns is at Zen-like peace with the fact that it doesn't matter one bit, and I chucked and gasped through every not-mattering minute.
Robbie Collin-Daily Telegraph

That it just about gets away with it is down to Kormákur's high energy and Wahlberg and Washington's winning performances, but less plot and more playfulness would have been welcome.
Amber Wilkinson-Eye for Film

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are at their best, a fun screen team and something a little lighter in the dog days of summer.

Review For Pieta

There is a touch too much of the handheld camera, but in general one senses that the very quality of the way this film was made is one of its justifications for being and for its raw moments.
Stanley Kauffmann-The New Republic

After being subjected to disturbing scenes of abject cruelty, rape and torture, my reactions shifted from squeamish revulsion to a reluctant yet growing appreciation for Kim's thematic ambition.
Jeff Shannon-Seattle Times

Fascination returns at the stirring climax, when the plot neatly twists and the film's apparently simple message turns deeper, and blacker.
Rick Groen-Globe and Mail

A mother's love for her child takes on brutal new meaning in Pieta, a film by Kim Ki-duk that's as hard to watch as it is to forget.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

Like many South Korean films, revenge is a major theme here, although the way Kim handles it is particularly subtle and surprising: It sneaks up on you.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

May not rank with the operatic madness of Park Chan-wook, or the visceral overkill of Kim Jee-woon, but if you're still not sick of feeling sick, then Pieta might be the movie for you.
William Goss-Film.com

It's compelling stuff, a film that starts out as one thing but subtly shifts to become something else entirely.
Mike Scott-Times-Picayune

Kim crafts a quietly powerful, character-driven morality tale that is less about the relationship between mother and son than it is about money and happiness.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

A gangster story with a latent conscience.
Katherine Monk-Canada.com

The film's big reveal may not come as that much of a surprise; you may figure out where it's going well before the end. But it's the getting there that is, if not exactly fun, then certainly hypnotic.
Cary Darling-Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com

[A] lurid but undeniably powerful story, and the lead performances are compelling.
Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion

By the time the last dark plot twist rolls around, any dollop of emotional connection has been diluted in a sea of empty unpleasantness.
Marc Mohan-Oregonian

Ki-duk's having his cake, and chewing it with his mouth open, too.
Andrew Wright-Portland Mercury

Wrenching Oedipal tragedy not for the casual viewer
Marty Mapes-Movie Habit

No comfort in this Pieta
Robert Denerstein-Movie Habit

The film contains some memorable moments, and a pair of fine performances, but it's hard not to feel that it would have proved more successful if it had stayed on the path it was heading down for the first forty minutes or so.
Oliver Lyttelton-The Playlist

The performances of these two leads are compelling and the Cheonggyecheon area can almost be seen as another character in Kim's morality tale.
Marjorie Baumgarten-Austin Chronicle

Kim has a very specific wringer he intends to usher his pawns through and a particular course he's plotted to it. Consequently, a complex, troubling character study slowly becomes a borderline conventional narrative.
Curtis Woloschuk-Paste Magazine
